Single Black Fathers - Little Known Facts Revealed

Every day, all over the world, single parenting is a quickly-growing family situation. It doesn't matter if the country is rich or poor, there are more single parents than ever before.

Societies are changing, and single parents aren't the social outcasts they were in olden times. Earlier societies that had strict moral codes used to view single parents as immoral or personal failures. They thought being a single parent was a sign of personal or intellectual weakness.

But today, many households are run by single parents, and single parents are not limited to one race or gender. You'll find single-parent families headed by men and women of many different races.

In fact, there are just about the same number of black and white males who are also single parents in the U.S. today. And those single fathers face the same challenges and problems.

The truth is that census figures don't really tell us how many black single-parent males are out there today, although the 2002 US Census did find that three of every ten children are raised by a single parent. But it's safe to assume that, no matter how many single black fathers there are today, the number is rising.

It doesn't really matter why. Whether children are born because they were wanted or not is not the issue. The fact that single parents choose to stay with and care for their children is the important point.

As mentioned earlier, black males face the same problems as do other single parents. And as other single parents are qualified for financial help, so are single black fathers.

Studies About Single Black Fathers

Several studies are available that examine the issue of single parenting for black males. The make one assumption up front: that single parenting is more difficult for men because they are not very domestic.

They suggest that men do not cope with single parenting as well as women. Some psychologists argue that single mothers tend to be more mature and emotionally stable than their male counterparts, making them more capable single parents.

On the other hand, some professionals argue that men approach parenting more logically than women do and that they are more likely to impose consistent rules and discipline on their children than their female counterparts.

One ethnographic researcher talked to single black fathers about their reasons for deciding to raise their children alone. They told the researcher that they felt a sense of duty for their children, that they wanted to avoid their own childhood experience of having a father absent, that they wanted to be a role model, and they that felt a strong bond with their kids. These fathers had high expectations for their kids and got most of their parenting advice from their mothers. Most of the fathers reported that single-parenting had a positive impact of their lives, and they felt the relationships with their children improved their own satisfaction with life in general.

America's contestant Chelsy Smith, who was Miss Texas , became the second black woman to be named Miss Universe in 1995 in Windhoek, the capital city of the African country of Namibia. She was also the first black semi-finalist since 1993.

Botswana

After a failed try for the 1997 Miss World title in Mahe, Seychelles ( Africa ), Mpule Kwelagobe, Miss Botswana, became Miss Universe in Chaguaramas ( Trinidad & Tobago ) in 1999. An international panel headed by former ambassador Charles Gargano chose Mpule -- which means in Tswana "one who comes with the rain" -- to be the last Miss Universe of the 20th century. Miss Universe 1999 once said, " Today women use their beauty and brains to stand up for what they believe in, and pageants are platforms to spearhead and promote issues of concern". She is one of Botswana's five national idols.

Venezuela

Venezuela's Carolina Indriago, who had been seen as the first black South American with real chance to capture a global title, finished fourth at the Miss Universe in 1999.

Trinidad & Tobago

Miss Trinidad Tobago, Janelle "Penny" Commissiong, lived up to her reputation as one of the most beautiful women of the Caribbean by winning the Miss Universe crown in 1977.She became the second woman to hold the MU and Miss Photogenic titles at the same time. During her reign, Janelle was seen as someone who could improve the status of race relations in the world.

Sarita Acosta became the first and only Miss Belize to make the semi-finals in the Miss Universe ( 1979 ). In the 70s, only five other black delegates did it : Cherrie Raphaelia Creque ( American Virgin Island, 1971 ), Maureen Ava Veira ( Aruba, 1974 ), Gerthie David ( Haiti, 1975 ), Janelle Commissiong ( Trinidad Tobago, 1977 ) and Gina Swainson ( Bermuda ).

Lesotho's delegate Joan Libuseng Khoali was one of 12 favorites to win the universal title in Acapulco ( Mexico ) in 1978. She came from Lesotho, a tiny kingdom on the African continent.

Dominican-born Italian Denny Mendez came to international attention in 1996 when she was the first black girl to capture the Miss Italy, one of the world's oldest beauty contests. She was chosen Miss Italy in a disputed and controversial election. In 1997 she placed fifth in the Miss Universe.

Gloria Karamanites was the only black candidate who qualified for the second round in the global contest in Seoul ( South Korea ) in 1980. In this decade, only five other black delegates did it: Benita Mureka ( Zaire, 1985 ), Deysi Nunes de Souza ( Brazil, 1986 ), Aimee Likobe Dobola ( Zaire, 1986 ), Carmelita Louise Ariza ( Turks & Caicos, 1987 ) and Sandra Foster ( Jamaica, 1989 ).

France

For a wedding theme of predominately black and pink with a touch of silver here are some ideas to consider. For a cheap way to brighten any reception room use balloons. Have bunches of pink and black balloons with silver string. Put about 4 bunches of 4 balloons at the entrance of where you walk into the reception room.

Put 5 bunches of the standing floor balloons scattered in the corners of the room and also put a small floor bunch at either side of the bar area. Around the outside of the centerpieces scatter pink rose petals.

Lastly, for the bridal table have the same layout minus the candelabras but instead have tea light candles beside a big bunch of your wedding flowers.

All of the hair is one color.

4. The color of your dyed hair is not the color of the model's hair, in the picture, on the hair dye box.

5. Your dyed hair looks dyed!

An acquaintance, an 84-year-old black woman, who looks 55 years old unless you look at her hair, was bitterly complaining to me about her hair.

1. Her hair was thick and looked healthy.

2. One third of her hair was a really ugly gray in big patches.

3. There was a white streak about an inch and a half wide, right on top of her head. It started at her forehead and ran to the back of her head, like the white stripe on a skunk.

Years before she had dyed her hair, even going to a beautician several times. Finally she had given up. She wore hats and scarves to hide her hair.

I suggested she pour a cup of coffee, allow it to cool, and then pour it on her hair. Get the hair really wet with the coffee and then comb the hair. Do not rinse the hair just let it dry.

She did so. When her hair was dry the white streak was a light silver color, the ugly harsh gray was muted, slightly darker and no longer ugly.

Her hair was no longer flat black; it was shiny and seemed to have more colors in it.

She stopped using hair conditioners because the oils in the coffee acted as a hair conditioner, with better results than the commercial hair conditioner she had been using.

She used the coffee on her hair daily until the colors were perfect, about 9 days. Now she does the coffee trick once a week. This takes care of the new root growth and maintains the great hair colors.

The colors do not rub off on your pillowcase!

She is ecstatic but I was not surprised.

For many years I have suggested coffee for black or dark hair for men and women, it always works!
