While there are no set levels of compensation, it may be better to fix compensation - which should be at par with the amount of effort they put in - to make a success of the project.
Responsibilities of Black Belts
Black & Decker Air Station
The Six Sigma Team is usually composed of Master Black Belts, Black Belts and Green Belts. There are other team members as well, such as project sponsors, champions and process owners.
The majority of the responsibility, however, rests with the Black Belts. They must undertake the important activities of the project and ensure that they are successfully completed.
Black Belts are generally selected taking into consideration their expertise levels and knowledge of business process, their certification, their knowledge of Six Sigma and their leadership skills.
They need to know and use the statistical tools and reports of Six Sigma, which are useful in decision making. Six Sigma Black Belts are also considered to be change agents. They are expected to successfully implement Six Sigma projects and to overcome resistance when changes are to be made.
They also have to undertake other activities, such as communicating with top management on various issues and coordinating with them to overcome barriers to smooth implementation.
Compensation for Black Belts
A Black Belt's job is to be a change agent. They undertake variety of roles and are key contributors to the success of the project. They are people who are dedicated with the full time responsibility of ensuring the progress of the project.
Their pay has to be on par with the top of the organizational pay scale. If the Black Belts are managers who perform their own managerial duties, as well as undertake Black Belt responsibility, then they may be paid higher or in addition to what they get at that level.
They must be compensated for their additional efforts for the betterment of the business' processes.
Monetary bonuses are also a good way to compensate Six Sigma Black Belts. The Black Belts try to bring about improvement, as well as savings by implementing such projects. Developing a structure - team based incentives and bonus structures - will be beneficial for all.
Appraisals are also the times when organizations can give good compensation for the efforts made by the Black Belts. They can be motivated to achieve greater targets - if appraisals are linked to their achievement.
Giving rewards during award functions can be a great motivator, not just for the Black Belts, but for all others on the team as well. There are other means, such as awards and incentives, which can be given in recognition of their efforts.
A policy could be put in place to give recognition to the contributors of the Six Sigma project.
Though there is the danger of directly tying bonuses to improvements, it is necessary that due care is taken to motivate Black Belts.
If compensation is not offered, it will always be a major factor for them to move on to greener pastures. Therefore, companies have to ensure that they have a good policy in place to compensate Six Sigma Black Belts.

If you've got Black & Decker tools that run on 18-volt batteries, you may as well stop reading here and just click on "Add to Shopping Cart." This Ni-Cad battery is a must-have for all Black & Decker tool owners.Black & Decker has built in a "no memory" technology that gives you 500 recharges (and more, we've heard) without ever losing capacity. And we could be wrong, but we think these do seem a little more powerful than the batteries that come with Firestorm and other Black & Decker 18-volt tools. But like those, these slide super-easily on and off tools, so even smaller hands have no trouble with them.
